Caring and youth-centric mobilities for inclusive urban proximity (CAMINUP)
CAMINUP is an international research project which examines the everyday urban experiences of young carers in four cities: Bucharest (Romania), Ghent (Belgium), London (UK), and Plovdiv (Bulgaria).
Our research uses both quantitative and qualitative methods to document how young carers access urban amenities and navigate mobility and immobility as part of their education, leisure, work, and care practices.
The project also explores broader lessons for urban governance and policy-making by bringing together diverse stakeholders from the case study cities. Together, we consider how collaboration across domains such as social care, education, urban planning, and transport planning can help create more inclusive and accessible cities.
The academic partners in the project are the Universities of Oxford, Plovdiv, Ghent, and Bucharest.
The community partners include Eurocarers, Ghent Municipality, Bucharest Municiaplity, the London Borough of Hounslow (UK), the National Rehabilitation Centre for the Blind (Bulgaria), Center for Independent Living (Bulgaria), Sofia University (Bulgaria), vzw Lejo (Belgium), and ZoJong! (Belgium).
The project is funded under the Driving Urban Transitions partnership, from 2026 to 2028.
